Tubeless vs Inner Tubes
Tubeless is genuinely better on gravel and genuinely more work. What the switch actually costs, what it actually fixes, and whether a first bike needs it.

Stay on inner tubes for your first season. Tubeless is a genuine improvement on gravel and it is also a project — $60 to $100 to set up, a fiddly first attempt, and an ongoing maintenance job that is easy to forget.
Switch when punctures have become a real, recurring annoyance on rides you actually do. That is a much better trigger than reading that tubeless is better, which it is, in a way that may not apply to you yet.

What tubeless actually is
A conventional setup is a tire with an inflated rubber balloon — the inner tube — inside it. The tube holds the air; the tire is just the wear surface and the tread.
Tubeless removes the balloon. The tire bead locks into a specially shaped rim and seals against it, and a few ounces of liquid sealant go in through the valve. When a thorn makes a small hole, air rushing out carries sealant into the hole, where it dries and plugs it — usually within a second or two, often without you noticing.
The two things it genuinely fixes
1. Small punctures stop being events
Thorns, glass slivers and flint chips are the everyday punctures on gravel, and tubeless seals almost all of them while you keep riding. You find the little scab of dried sealant later and never knew it happened.
2. You can run lower pressure
This is the one most people underrate, and it is arguably the bigger deal. With a tube, running low pressure risks a pinch flat: hit a rock hard enough and the rim squeezes the tube against it, cutting two parallel slits.
No tube, no pinch. So you can drop 5 to 10 PSI, and on a wide gravel tire that is a substantial change — noticeably more grip, noticeably less rattle. If you have read our tire pressure guide and concluded your ideal pressure is uncomfortably low for tubes, that is the clearest signal that tubeless would suit you.
What it actually costs
This is the part that gets left out of the enthusiasm. Assuming your wheels and tires are already tubeless-ready:
- Sealant— about $15 to $25 for a bottle covering both wheels
- Tubeless valves— about $15 a pair
- Tubeless rim tape— about $15, if the wheels are not taped
- A charger pump or compressor— about $60 and up, and often necessary
- Tubeless-ready tires— $50 to $80 each, if yours are not
Call it $60 to $100 if the equipment is already compatible, and considerably more if it is not.
The maintenance nobody mentions
Sealant is water-based and it dries out inside the tire. You have to top it up every three to six months, more often in a hot dry climate. Dried sealant seals nothing.
This is the failure people actually experience: a tubeless setup that has quietly had no working sealant since spring, discovered at the roadside in October. It is not difficult to avoid — it is one job, twice a year — and it is a job that does not exist with tubes.
The other one: you still carry a spare inner tube. A cut too big for sealant means removing the valve, fitting a tube and riding home with sealant everywhere. Tubeless reduces punctures; it does not remove the need to know how to fix one.
Check compatibility before you buy anything
Both the rim and the tire have to be designed for it. The rim needs a bead shape that locks the tire in place; the tire needs a bead that seals against it. Manufacturers publish this — WTB, for instance, publishes a tire and rim fit chart specifying which tire widths are approved for which internal rim widths.
Do not improvise this. Converting equipment that is not designed for it is one of the few genuinely dangerous shortcuts in bicycle maintenance, because a tire unseating at speed is not a slow failure.
Who should switch, and when
Switch if: you ride gravel regularly, you puncture more than a couple of times a season, you ride in thorn country, or you have worked out that your ideal tire pressure is lower than tubes safely allow.
Stay on tubes if: you mostly ride pavement, you puncture rarely, you would rather not have a maintenance schedule, or your wheels are not tubeless-ready and the upgrade means new wheels.
For most people reading this site — first drop-bar bike, first season, learning what they like — tubes are the right answer for now, and the switch is a decision that will make more sense in a year.

Should a beginner run tubeless tires?
Not in the first season. Tubeless costs $60 to $100 to set up, is fiddly the first time, and needs sealant topped up every three to six months. Ride the tubes your bike came with, learn to fix a flat, and switch when punctures have become a genuine annoyance rather than a hypothetical one.
What is a tubeless tire?
A tire that seals directly against the rim with no inner tube inside it, holding air with the help of a liquid sealant sloshing around within. When a thorn makes a small hole, the sealant is pushed into it and plugs it, usually while you are still riding.
How much does it cost to go tubeless?
Roughly $60 to $100. That is tubeless-ready tires if yours are not already, sealant, tubeless valves, rim tape, and often a charger pump because a standard floor pump frequently cannot seat the bead. Your wheels and tires must both be tubeless-ready — check before buying anything.
Do tubeless tires still get flats?
Yes, just fewer and different ones. Small punctures from thorns and glass usually seal themselves. Large cuts and sidewall tears do not — the sealant sprays out and the tire deflates. That is why tubeless riders still carry an inner tube: the emergency fix is to remove the valve and fit a tube.
How often do you top up tubeless sealant?
Every three to six months, depending on climate. Sealant is water-based and dries out inside the tire, and dried sealant seals nothing. This is the maintenance job people forget, and forgetting it means discovering on a ride that your puncture protection stopped existing months ago.
Can I convert my bike to tubeless?
Only if both the wheels and the tires are tubeless-ready — the rim needs the right bead shape and the tire needs a bead designed to seal against it. Check the manufacturer's specification for both. Converting non-tubeless-ready equipment with tape and hope is a genuinely bad idea, because a tire blowing off a rim at speed is not a minor failure.
