Editorial Policy

How picks are chosen, how corrections work, what we update and when, and the commitments we hold ourselves to on every page.

Independence

No brand has paid to appear on this site, no brand has been given a preview of a comparison, and no brand has ever asked us to change anything. If any of that ever changes, it will be disclosed on the page in question and on the funding page, not quietly.

We earn affiliate commission on Amazon links. Commission rates have never been a ranking input and are not visible at the point a ranking is decided. Several of the top picks on this site pay us less than the products ranked below them, which is the practical test of whether a claim like this one is true.

How picks are chosen

The criteria are published in full, weighted, and applied identically to every product on how we pick. The short version: we rank for the specific person buying their first drop-bar bike, not for the best bike in the abstract, and we weight most heavily the things a first-time buyer is least equipped to evaluate themselves.

What we will not publish

  • Testing claims for products we have not tested. We own none of these bikes. No “in our testing”, no ride impressions, no durability claims. That is stated on every page rather than only here.
  • Fabricated reviews, testimonials or ratings. We have no customers, so we have no testimonials. There will never be a review section on this site, and there is no star rating or score anywhere on it.
  • Credentials nobody here holds. No certifications, no “expert panel”, no “reviewed by our mechanics”.
  • Estimated specifications. If a listing does not publish a figure, the page says “Not published”. We would rather look incomplete than be wrong.
  • Remembered prices. Prices come from a live feed that expires after 48 hours. There is no way to hand-enter one.
  • Urgency and scarcity language. No “act now”, no “limited time”, no countdown. We cannot verify it and it is the register of exactly the sites we are trying not to be.

The “skip this if” commitment

Every product on this site carries a line naming who should not buy it, and pointing them at what to buy instead. This is a hard rule, not a stylistic habit. A comparison where every option is excellent is a sales sheet, and both readers and search engines read it as one.

Corrections

This site is built by reading listings carefully, and listings change without notice. Some of what is here will be wrong eventually.

  1. Tell us. Use the contact form or email info@gearandgrade.com. Pointing at the specific page and figure helps.
  2. We check it against the manufacturer or retailer listing — the primary source, not another site’s write-up.
  3. If you are right, we fix itand move the page’s last-updated date. If a correction changes a recommendation rather than a detail, we say so on the page rather than editing silently.
  4. If we cannot verify it either way, the figure becomes “Not published”, which is the honest state.

Update cadence

  • Prices: refreshed daily and automatically, never by hand.
  • Comparisons and rankings: reviewed quarterly.
  • Model-year audit: every spring, because entry-level bikes revise annually.
  • Specifications: re-read against the source listing on every edit to a page.
  • This page and the other trust pages: annually, or immediately whenever how we make money changes.

A last updated date moves only when a genuine re-check happened. A date bump without the work is a small lie, and small lies are the whole thing this site is positioned against.

Authorship

Every page is written by one person, named on the byline, with a link to who he actually is. There is no anonymous “editorial team” standing in for a person, and the machine-readable author on every article matches the name printed on it.
