Gravel Bike Tire Pressure
The free upgrade almost every beginner is missing. What pressure to run, how to find yours, and why the number on the sidewall is not it.
Most beginners run their gravel tires 20 to 30 psi too hard. It is the most common and most easily fixed mistake in gravel riding, it costs nothing to correct, and it changes how the bike feels more than any component upgrade at this price.
The reason is simple: people either use the number printed on the tire, or they carry over what they know from road bikes. Both are wrong here.
The sidewall number is a limit, not a target
A gravel tire may say something like “max 70 psi”. Run 70 psi in a 40mm gravel tire and you get a ride that is harsh, skittery on loose surfaces, and genuinely slower over rough ground — while also being more likely to slide out in a corner.
Never exceed the sidewall figure, or the lower of the tire and rim limits if they differ. But treat it as a fence, not a destination.
Where to start
These are starting points to test from, derived from rider weight and tire width — the two variables that matter most. They assume tubes rather than tubeless, and they are deliberately conservative.

Starting points for testing, not prescriptions. Weight means you plus the bike plus anything you are carrying. Silca and Schwalbe both publish calculators that take more variables including rim width and surface — both are linked in the sources below, and both are free.
How to find your own number, in one ride
- Start at the table figure for your weight and tire width.
- Ride a familiar loop that includes the roughest surface you normally meet.
- Drop 2 psi and ride it again.
- Keep going until something tells you to stop — the bike feels vague or squirmy leaning into a corner, the tire visibly rolls on the rim, or you feel the rim strike through on a bump.
- Go back up 2 psi. That is your pressure.
It will be lower than you expected, and the bike will feel like a different machine on rough ground — quieter, more planted, and less tiring.
Front and rear should not match
A free improvement almost nobody makes. More of your weight sits over the rear wheel, so:
- Rear: 2 to 4 psi higher, which protects against pinch flats where the load is greatest.
- Front: lower, which buys grip and comfort exactly where you steer and where a slide is hardest to recover.
Why lower pressure can be faster
This is counterintuitive, so it is worth explaining rather than asserting.
On a perfectly smooth surface, a harder tire deforms less and rolls faster. That is the intuition, and on a velodrome it is correct.
On a rough surface, a hard tire cannot deform around bumps, so instead the whole bike and rider get lifted over every one of them. Lifting 180 pounds of bike and rider a few millimeters, thousands of times, costs far more energy than flexing a tire casing does. A softer tire absorbs the bump and keeps moving forward.
This is why there is a crossover point, and why gravel pressures are so much lower than road pressures.
What changes the number
- Wider tire: lower pressure. More air volume supports the same weight at lower pressure. This is the whole argument for running wider tires if your frame clears them.
- Heavier rider or loaded bags: higher pressure. Add roughly 1 psi per 10 lb of extra load.
- Rougher surface: lower. Chunky gravel wants more float.
- Wet conditions: slightly lower for grip.
- Tubeless: you can go several psi lower than with tubes, because there is no tube to pinch — one of the main arguments for it.
You cannot do any of this without a gauge
Squeezing a tire with your thumb cannot distinguish 30 psi from 45. A floor pump with a readable gauge is what makes every one of the adjustments above possible, and it is item two on the starter kit list for this reason.
Check before every ride if you can. Bicycle tires lose air continuously through the tube walls and the valve — a gravel tire can drop several psi in a week, which at these pressures is a significant proportion of the total. Five pumps compared here.
Questions people actually ask
What pressure should I run in gravel tires?
For a 40mm tire, most riders land somewhere between 28 and 40 psi depending on body weight — far lower than beginners assume. WTB's own guidance for high-volume gravel tires is around 30 to 35 psi. Start from the table on this page, then drop 2 psi at a time until the bike feels vague in corners and go back up 2.
Why is the pressure on my tire sidewall so high?
Because it is a maximum safe limit, not a recommendation. It is the pressure the tire and rim are certified to contain, set by the manufacturer for safety and liability. Running at that number on a gravel bike gives a harsh, skittery ride with less grip, not a faster one.
Does lower tire pressure make you slower?
On smooth pavement, slightly. On rough or unpaved surfaces, lower pressure is usually faster, because a tire that deforms around bumps loses less energy than a rigid one bouncing over them. That crossover point is why gravel and road pressures differ so much.
How do I know if my tire pressure is too low?
The bike feels vague or squirmy when you lean into a corner, the tire visibly rolls on the rim, or you feel the rim strike through on bumps. That last one — a pinch flat risk — is the hard floor. Go back up 2 psi from wherever you first notice any of these.
Should I run different pressures front and rear?
Yes, and it is an easy free gain. More of your weight sits over the rear wheel, so run the rear roughly 2 to 4 psi higher than the front. The front then has more grip and comfort where you steer, and the rear has more protection against pinch flats.
Do I need to check tire pressure before every ride?
Ideally yes, and it takes under a minute with a floor pump. Bicycle tires lose air continuously through the tube walls and valve — a road or gravel tire can drop noticeably within a week — so this is normal rather than a sign of a puncture.
