1x vs 2x Gearing

One chainring at the front, or two. What you gain in simplicity, what you lose in range, and which one belongs on a first gravel bike.

Either is fine for a first bike, and it is not the question you should be asking. What actually decides whether a bike is pleasant on your local hill is how low its lowest gear is — and that is set by two numbers that have nothing to do with how many chainrings there are.

If you want a preference: 1x if you find gears confusing, because it halves the number of decisions. 2x if you ride a lot of flat road, because the smaller steps between gears make it easier to hold a steady effort.

What the words mean

A bicycle drivetrain has rings at the front (chainrings, attached to the pedals) and sprockets at the back (the cassette, attached to the wheel). The gear you are in is the combination of one at each end.

  • 2x, said “two-by”: two chainrings. A big one for going fast and a small one for going up. Two shifters — left for chainrings, right for the cassette.
  • 1x, said “one-by”: one chainring. One shifter, on the right. Nothing on the left.

This is also where “21 speed” and “24 speed” come from — chainrings multiplied by sprockets. Those numbers are close to meaningless, because many of the combinations duplicate each other and several should not be used at all. Our groupsets guide explains why the headline gear count misleads.

Range is the thing that actually matters

Forget the gear count and look at two numbers: the smallest chainring and the largest sprocket. Together they are your climbing gear, and that is what decides whether a hill is rideable or a walk.

A 2x setup can beat a 1x on range simply because it has an extra small chainring to fall back on. That is the honest engineering argument and Shimano make it themselves in their published guidance on 1x and 2x gravel setups: two chainrings give a wider spread with closer steps, one chainring gives simplicity and less to go wrong.

But a modern 1x with a wide-range cassette — a 40-tooth chainring against a 42-tooth largest sprocket — has a climbing gear as low as most 2x road setups. The label does not tell you the answer; the two numbers do.

Why 1x took over gravel

Gravel riding punishes the front derailleur specifically. It is the component closest to the ground, it shifts worst under load, and load is exactly what you are under when you need it — grinding up a loose climb.

Removing it gives you:

  • One shifter, one decision. Easier gear on the right, harder gear on the right. That is the whole system.
  • No cross-chaining to think about. No combinations to avoid.
  • Fewer dropped chains. 1x chainrings use alternating narrow and wide teeth that grip the chain, and it stays on over washboard.
  • Less to adjust. One derailleur, and the easier of the two.
  • More tire clearance. No front derailleur means room for a wider tire.

Why 2x still wins on smooth road

The cost of 1x is bigger gaps between gears. The same number of sprockets has to cover a wider spread, so each shift changes your pedaling speed more.

On gravel this barely registers — the surface is varying constantly and you are not holding a precise cadence anyway. On a long flat road at a steady effort, it does: with 2x you can usually find the gear that feels exactly right, and with 1x you are sometimes choosing between slightly too easy and slightly too hard.

This is why road bikes are still overwhelmingly 2x, and why the gravel-versus-endurance-road decision often comes with this one attached.

What is actually on a budget bike

Worth knowing before you go looking: most gravel and road bikes under about $1,200 are 2x, because 2x groupsets are cheaper to make. Shimano’s gravel-specific GRX series offers both, and it typically appears around $1,200 to $1,500.

So for most readers of this site the choice is somewhat made for you, and that is fine. A 2x budget bike with a low enough climbing gear is a better purchase than a 1x bike that leaves you walking up hills.

What to actually check when buying

  1. What is the smallest chainring? On a 2x, 34 teeth or fewer is good. On a 1x, 40 or fewer.
  2. What is the largest sprocket? 32 teeth or more on a 2x, 40 or more on a 1x.
  3. Is there a hill near you that you are worried about? That is the real question, and those two numbers answer it.

Budget listings frequently publish none of this, which is itself worth noticing — every bike on our roundups shows “Not published” where the listing does not say, rather than a guess.

Questions people actually ask

Is 1x or 2x better for a gravel bike?

1x is simpler to ride and to maintain; 2x has a wider range with smaller steps between gears. For a first gravel bike, either is fine — what actually matters is whether the lowest gear is low enough for the hills where you live. Check that first and treat the 1x-versus-2x question as secondary.

What does 1x mean on a bike?

One chainring at the front instead of two, so there is only one shifter for gears — the right-hand one. It is pronounced 'one-by'. Fewer parts, fewer decisions, and a narrower total range than a two-chainring setup with the same cassette.

Does 1x have enough gears for hills?

It can, but only if it is set up for it. A 1x system's lowest gear depends on the chainring size and the largest sprocket on the cassette. A 40-tooth chainring with a 42-tooth largest sprocket gives a genuinely low climbing gear; a 42-tooth chainring with a 34 does not. Look at those two numbers rather than at the gear count.

Why do 1x bikes have bigger gaps between gears?

Because the same number of sprockets has to cover a wider spread of ratios. On a 2x system you can change chainring to shift the whole range up or down and use small steps within it. With one chainring, the cassette must do everything, so each shift is a bigger jump in cadence — which matters most on flat road riding at a steady effort.

Can I convert my 2x bike to 1x?

Technically often yes, and it rarely makes sense on a budget bike. You need a narrow-wide chainring to retain the chain, and usually a new cassette and rear derailleur to recover the range you lost — which costs more than the simplicity is worth. If a 2x bike shifts well, leave it alone.

Do I need to worry about this when buying a first bike?

Less than the marketing suggests. What decides whether a bike is pleasant to ride up your local hill is its lowest gear, not how many chainrings produce it. Ask what the smallest chainring and largest sprocket are, and treat the 1x-versus-2x label as a description rather than a specification.
