Crankset and Chainrings Explained
What 50/34 means, why compact is not a size, and how to read the front of a drivetrain when a listing gives you two numbers and no explanation.
The crankset is the part you pedal: two crank arms, and one or two toothed rings bolted to the right-hand one. British listings call it a chainset. It is the same thing, and the words are used interchangeably even within a single spec sheet.
What matters about it is the tooth counts, because those numbers — together with the cassette at the back — decide the easiest gear you have available. That is the gear that determines whether a steep hill is a climb or a walk.
Reading the numbers
A listing that says 50/34 is telling you the bike has two chainrings with 50 and 34 teeth. One that says 11-34 is telling you the cassette runs from an 11-tooth sprocket to a 34-tooth one.
Your hardest gear is the biggest ring with the smallest sprocket. Your easiest is the smallest ring with the biggest sprocket. On a 50/34 with an 11-34 cassette, the easiest gear pairs 34 teeth at the front with 34 at the back — a one-to-one ratio, which is a genuinely useful climbing gear on a road bike.
The five setups you will actually meet

“Compact” is the word that causes the most confusion, because it sounds like it refers to the size of the bike or the length of the cranks. It does not. It refers only to the chainrings being 50 and 34 rather than the older racing 53 and 39.
Crank length, and why you can ignore it
Cranks come in lengths, usually from 165mm to 175mm, measured from the center of the pedal thread to the center of the axle. Manufacturers fit them by frame size — shorter cranks on smaller frames — and you will find the length stamped on the inside of the crank arm.
For a first bike this is not a decision. The differences between adjacent lengths are subtle, the bike came with a sensible one, and changing cranks is an expensive way to chase a variable you cannot feel. It becomes a genuine question for riders with very short legs on large frames, or where a hip or knee issue makes a deep pedal stroke uncomfortable.
How the front rings interact with the back
Two chainrings at the front and eleven sprockets at the back does not give you twenty-two useful gears. Several combinations duplicate each other, and the extreme ones — big ring to biggest sprocket, small ring to smallest — put the chain at a severe angle.
What a 2x setup really gives you is two overlapping ranges: an easier one and a harder one, with a comfortable middle in each. You use the small ring for climbing and the big ring for everything else, and you shift between them at the bottom of hills rather than mid-climb.
A 1x setup deletes the front shift entirely and covers the range with a very wide cassette instead. Shimano publish their own explanation of the trade, and we have written up what it means for a first gravel bike.
If your bottom gear is not low enough
This is the practical reason anyone reads a page about chainrings. In order of cost and hassle:
- Fit a bigger cassette. Going from an 11-28 to an 11-34 is a chain and a cassette, and it may need a derailleur with enough capacity. Cheapest real improvement.
- Fit smaller chainrings. Possible if the bolt pattern allows it, and it may need a shorter chain and front derailleur adjustment.
- Change the crankset. A sub-compact crankset gives the lowest gears available on a drop-bar bike, and it is the most expensive route.
Before any of that, check the gears are actually working: a drivetrain that will not reach its biggest sprocket cleanly can feel like a gearing problem when it is a setup problem. Indexing is a ten-minute fix, and it is free.
Questions people actually ask
What does 50/34 mean on a bike?
It is the number of teeth on the two chainrings at the front: 50 teeth on the big ring and 34 on the small one. More teeth on the front means a harder gear and more speed per pedal stroke; fewer teeth means an easier one. 50/34 is called a compact crankset and it is the standard fitment on almost every entry-level road bike, because the 34 gives a genuinely usable climbing gear.
What is a compact crankset?
A crankset with 50 and 34-tooth chainrings, as opposed to the older 'standard' 53/39. The name refers to the chainrings, not to the length of the cranks or the size of the bike - which is a common confusion. Compact gearing gives an easier bottom gear than standard, at the cost of a top gear you will only run out of on a fast descent.
Is a crankset the same as a chainset?
Yes. Chainset is the British term and crankset is the American one for the same assembly: the two crank arms, the chainrings bolted to the right-hand one, and the spider that holds them. If a listing uses one word and a guide uses the other, they are describing the same part.
What crank length should I use?
Whatever came on the bike, unless you have a specific reason. Manufacturers fit crank length by frame size - typically 170mm on small and medium frames and 172.5mm on larger ones - and the differences between adjacent lengths are small enough that most riders cannot detect them. It becomes a real question for riders with short legs on large frames, or anyone with a hip or knee issue.
Can I change my chainrings to get easier gears?
Sometimes, and it is usually not the cheapest route. Chainrings bolt to the crank in a specific bolt pattern, so replacements have to match, and a smaller front ring can need a shorter chain and may confuse a front derailleur set up for the original size. Fitting a wider-range cassette at the back is normally the cheaper and simpler way to get an easier climbing gear.
Do I need a sub-compact crankset for gravel?
It helps a lot if you ride steep, loose climbs or carry luggage. Sub-compact rings like 48/31 or 46/30 give a much lower bottom gear than a road compact, which is the whole point of gravel-specific groupsets like Shimano GRX. If your gravel is rolling dirt roads and you are not carrying much, a road compact with a wide cassette gets you close enough.
