Bike Geometry Explained
The table of numbers on every spec sheet, translated. Which two actually decide whether a bike fits you, and which ones you can safely ignore.
A geometry chart is a table of a dozen measurements that most bike listings either publish in full or omit entirely. It looks like the technical heart of the spec sheet. In practice, two of those numbers matter for buying a bike and the rest describe handling.
The two are stack and reach. If you read nothing else here, read that section.
Every term, in one line each

Why stack and reach replaced frame size
Seat tube length used to be a reasonable proxy for fit, back when top tubes were horizontal. Sloping top tubes broke it, and the industry replaced it with two measurements taken from the bottom bracket:
- Stack — the vertical distance up to the top of the head tube. Higher stack, more upright riding position.
- Reach — the horizontal distance forward to the same point. Longer reach, more stretched out.
The pair describes the space your body has to occupy, in a way that does not depend on what the manufacturer chose to call the size. If you have a bike that fits, its stack and reach are the most useful numbers you own for judging the next one.
What actually changes as sizes go up
This is worth seeing in real published numbers rather than in the abstract. Surly publish a full geometry table for the Long Haul Trucker. On the 700c platform, across four sizes from 56cm to 62cm:
- Reach: 389.3mm → 403.0mm. About 14mm across four sizes.
- Stack: 588.0mm → 643.2mm. Over 55mm across the same range.
- Head tube angle: 72.0 degrees on every one of the four sizes.
Read that again, because it is the single most useful thing on this page: going up a frame size mostly raises the front end, it does not stretch you out much. Stack changes roughly four times as much as reach.
Which is why the standard fix for “this bike feels too long” is a shorter stem rather than a smaller frame, and the standard fix for “the bars are too low” is spacers or a flipped stem — both of which are covered in the fit guide.
The handling numbers, briefly
These are real, they are just not decisions a first-time buyer makes. In descending order of how much you would notice:
- Head tube angle. A slacker angle (a smaller number) puts the front wheel further ahead of you. Calmer at speed and on loose gravel, slower to turn at walking pace. Surly’s touring frame runs 70–71.5 degrees on the 26in sizes, which is deliberately unhurried; a racy road bike is nearer 73.
- Chainstay length. Short chainstays feel lively. Long ones are stable under load and keep your heels clear of rear panniers, which is exactly why touring frames have them.
- Bottom bracket drop. More drop lowers your center of gravity and plants the bike; less drop keeps the pedals further from rocks.
- Trail. A derived figure describing how strongly the steering self-centers. Genuinely interesting, genuinely irrelevant to a first purchase.
When a listing publishes none of this
Budget bikes frequently publish a frame size in centimeters and nothing else — no stack, no reach, sometimes no angles. That is a finding rather than a dealbreaker: it means you are buying on the manufacturer’s height chart alone, and you should weight that chart accordingly.
Trek make the useful general point in their sizing guidance that fit depends on heightand inseam rather than height alone, which is why two riders the same height can need different frames. Where a maker publishes a real chart — as Tommaso do for their frames — use it, and measure yourself properly first.

Questions people actually ask
What is stack and reach on a bike?
Stack is how high the top of the head tube sits above the bottom bracket, measured vertically. Reach is how far forward it sits, measured horizontally. Together they describe the space your body occupies on the bike, independent of frame size labels - which is why they are the two numbers worth comparing between bikes. High stack and short reach means an upright, comfortable position; low stack and long reach means a stretched, aggressive one.
Which geometry numbers actually matter for a beginner?
Stack and reach, and then only when comparing two bikes you are choosing between. Everything else - head angle, trail, bottom bracket drop - describes handling in ways that are real but subtle, and no first-time buyer is going to feel a one-degree head angle difference. Get the size right, adjust the saddle and bars, and treat the rest of the table as background.
Does gravel bike geometry differ from road bike geometry?
Yes, consistently. A gravel frame typically has a slacker head angle, a longer wheelbase, more bottom bracket drop and more tire clearance than a road frame of the same size. Those changes make it calmer on loose surfaces and slightly less eager on smooth tarmac. It is also usually taller at the front - a higher stack for a given reach - which is why gravel bikes feel more comfortable to most new riders.
How much does geometry change between frame sizes?
Far more in stack than in reach, and Surly's published Long Haul Trucker table shows it clearly. Across the four 700c sizes, 56cm to 62cm, reach runs from 389.3mm to 403.0mm - about 14mm - while stack runs from 588.0mm to 643.2mm, over 55mm. So going up a size mostly raises the bars rather than stretching you out, which is the opposite of what most people assume.
What is a slack head tube angle?
A head tube angle is the angle of the fork relative to the ground, and slack means a smaller number - 70 or 71 degrees rather than 73. A slacker fork puts the front wheel further out in front of you, which makes the steering calmer at speed and on rough ground, and slower to turn at low speed. Surly publish 70 to 71.5 degrees across the sizes of their touring frame, which is deliberately calm.
Should I choose a bike based on its geometry chart?
Only as a tiebreaker between two bikes you already like. Geometry charts are most useful when you know the stack and reach of a bike that fits you and want to check whether another bike is close. If you have no reference point, the chart is abstract numbers - your height, inseam and a manufacturer's size chart are the practical route to a first bike.
